A program developed by Lujendra Ojha and colleagues that could scrutinize individual pixels in images, analyzed high resolution images from Nasa’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft and gave the first definitive proof that water flows on Mars every summer. This discovery is important for many reasons and has spiked interest in scientists dedicated to solving one of the biggest missions of space science – finding life on Mars. While it is unlikely that the salty water is a nutrimental support to microbial life, it has given hope that other sources of water might exist that might support life away from the hot and radiation blasted surface. Besides, the water will be a good resource for astronauts when man can finally land on Mars and may perhaps improve our understanding of the events that led to the desolation of this planet that used to be so much like Earth.
