Chennai is normally safe from the annual trends of cyclones and rainfalls that visit Tamil Nadu every year. But this year, the city is flooded by the heaviest rainfall it has seen in the last hundred years. The city has been flooded with water since the beginning of November, stranding hundreds of people in small islands surrounded by water, with neither food nor means of conveyance.
At least 188 people have been reported dead in the floods. Schools, colleges, businesses have all been shut and many airlines and trains have been cancelled and delayed.
The Indian Army has approached to help mitigate the situation in the region. Supplied were delivered on board the INS Airavat, along with a team of doctors and rescue squad. The rescue efforts have also been aided by Olx cab services, who have recently started a ferry service to rescue stranded people.
