Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, passed away on January 7, having served less than a year as the 12th Chief Minister for Kashmir.
Mr Mufti will be succeeded by his daughter, Mehbooba Mufti, president of the People’s Democratic Party in Indian part of Kashmir.
Born in 1936, Mr Mufti grew up to have a colorful political career and became the first Indian Muslim to be appointed as Home Minister. Mr Sayeed failed to find a party he liked enough to stay there for long. He jumped ships quite often, starting with a brief stint for the National Conference, then Congress, Janata Dal and back to Congress. He finally gave up and decided to form his own party – The PDP.
Mr Mufti’s reputation suffered greatly when he released militants for saving his daughter, Rubaiyya Sayeed, when she was kidnapped. His career bounced back soon, and he went to win the state assembly election in 2014, following which he made a coalition with BJP and became the CM.
Several leaders took to social media to express their condolences for the occasion.
