In a remarkable initiative, Paris observed a no traffic day yesterday, demonstrating its love for environment and healthy living. No traffic other than taxis and emergency vehicles was allowed in rush areas including the Champs Élysées, Place Stalingrad, Place de la Republique, the Left Bank, the Place de la Bastille, the area around the Eiffel Tower and the Bois de Vincennes and Boulogne. Vehicles in all other areas maintained a speed limit of 20km/hr.
Paris has been creative and dedicated in its efforts to reduce pollution and has introduced many projects to promote green living such as adding cyclical paths around certain prime recreational destinations, introducing rental bicycles on the streets and electric cars for the residents.
The scope of the event was smaller than hoped for, said Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo, but she hopes to repeat it again next year on a bigger scale. The city will also host the global summit on climate change later this year in November.
