Russia started air strikes in Syria on Wednesday.
This new entrant is an unpredictable addition to an already tumultuous conflict between US, Assad, and rebel forces in the country. While Russia has said that its attacks are targeted towards forces of the Islamic State, reports from multiple sources suggest otherwise. The US challenged Russia’s position and has alleged that Russia’s intentions are dubious and it has been firing at civilians and US-sponsored anti-Assad forces at Homs.
These concerns were shared by others from the allied forces including NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg. So the question remains: What is Russia thinking? No matter. US is not concerned with what Russia does, as long as Assad is forced to step down. “If Russia’s recent actions and those now ongoing reflect a genuine commitment to defeat that organisation then we are prepared to welcome those efforts,” – Secretary of state John Kerry.
