Ex-Dawood henchman, Chhota Rajan was arrested in Indonesia this Sunday. Rajan has been wanted for decades for crimes related to extortion, 17 murders, film funding, drug trafficking and smuggling. His capture has raised hopes for Indian Intelligence agencies for finding a lead on Dawood’s whereabouts.
Chhota Rajan aka Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje takes his name after his mentor Bada Rajan, who passed away in a gang tussle. Rajan then went on to make his own gang and work under Dawood Ibrahim – the notorious gold and silver smuggler from India. The duo split ways after the Mumbai blasts in 93, when Rajan accused Dawood of being anti-national and cut all association with him. Rajan was then also supported by radical Hindu groups like the Shiv Sena, for his open support to the Hindu cause.
Rajan has been overseas for quite some years now. His intelligence network is said to be far superior to his ex-boss. His brother, Deepak Nikhalje is a known politician in India. Rajan had previously collaborated with Indian Intelligence officer Ajit Kumar Doval in an unsuccessful operation to capture Dawood. He has since then evaded capture.
Rajan was captured due to a tip-off by Australian Police when he left Sydney airport in a flight to Bali. The National Security Advisor of India, Ex-IB chairman Ajit Kumar Doval is also reported to have played a part in the event.
