Australia’s first international icon, legendary rock singer Stevie Wright passed away on December 27. Stevie Wright – the face of The Easybeats and the man behind the 11-minute epic, Evie, took his final breath at a hospital in New South Wales, two days after Christmas.
Fans mourned and remembered the band that rocked Australia with swinging hits like Sorry, She’s so Fine, Wedding Ring and the evergreen song Friday On My Mind. After the tragic break up of the band in 1969, Wright continued shining in a solo career that finally succumbed to drug and alcohol addiction.
Nevertheless, Wright was a man who fought and won over his own demons, and Australia loved him all the more for it. A truly unforgettable icon in Australian history. In the words of Musician Donna G: “Vale Stevie Wright, a true Australian Rock Icon. Man, we will never forget you. Thank you for everything! Rest in peace, legend.”
His last performance was at the Rock Festival at Byron Bay in 2009.
