India lost to England by merely nine runs in one of the most exciting finals at the Lord’s. Already, comparisons are being drawn with the famous triumph of the men’s team in 1983 at the very same historic ground of Lord’s. After restricting England to 228/7 in 50 overs, India was cruising along in the championship match with Punam Raut and Harmanpreet Kaur both slamming half-centuries. But the route of the match completely changed in the 43rd over of the match when Anya Shrubsole got rid of Raut for 86. The Indian opener was adjudged LBW by the on-field umpire and in the end, that proved to be the turning point of the match.
Cricket fans, celebrities and politicians, however, celebrated India’s journey to the final and praised the girls for their performance in the tournament. Akshay Kumar, Priyanka Chopra, Shah Rukh Khan, Ranveer Singh and many other B-town stars came together to cheer up the team. Akshay Kumar, who was in London to promote his upcoming film, Toilet Ek Prem Katha, made a point to experience the match live. He kept cheering the team through Twitter and then in live too. Shah Rukh took to Twitter and wrote, “I wish I was there to give the Lovely Ladies a hug. Be proud girls we have achieved greatness today. @BCCIWomen u made all Indians proud.” India skipper Mithali Raj has been chosen as the captain of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 team by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday.
